Burningman 2007:

The Green Man

Event 3: Dust to snob tour

This was the year of the dust storm. I also had a chance to be on snob art tour that went wrong.

Sunday a week before the event was one long whiteout most of the day light hours. Lady Bee asked me to drive her to the DPW Depot-all of 1/4 mile away. The trip took about 20 minutes because we continually had to stop; unable to see past the hood of the car.

At the 'Way It Is' meeting in the commisary, the dust INSIDE was so bad that seeing across the room was often impossible. With the howling wind, the speaker needed a bullhorn to be heard.

I never saw this working during the day, but the masks were supposed to be hooked up to LCD shutters to let people see the 'stobe' effect during the day.

In just a couple days of severe wind, I built up a 'beach' up wind of my wind shade that was at least 6" deep at times.

I was a bouncer; there to make sure that only those who had been invited would get onto the art car escorting us on our tour.

The art car was huge, but still clearly overloaded with the large number of people on the tour. We stopped frequently to see art or to turn the wagon.

Sacramento Dave (in straw hat looking away) is a long time friend also on the tour.

Eventually, the art car owners could tell that damage was being done with the huge load. They got everyone to get off the vehicle WAY out by the oil derrick (past the Temple) and told us all to find our ways back to the city! No fancy dinner as planned, I walked with Sac Dave and Playa Barbie from K-svert Radio the mile or so back to their camp. At least it was a warm eve and the company was good.
