Burningman 2012:

Fertility 2.0

Project

Mayan Tricycle

Next prototype 2

I need to build a bigger model, more in the style of the real thing. This one is a 1:6 scale. 1 inch on the model will be half a foot on the real thing.

A template for cutting the 16" (8' in scale) 2x4s

I need 73 for the larger ring for this version of the model

2x4s cut, I drill holes in each end of the boards for a nail (to keep the wood from spliiting). Another template. Templates are good when doing something dozens or hundreds of times.

Setting 146 little nails.

The 2 main rings made on top of each other as if on the playa

med | big | huge

The top ring is offset

And vertical 8' 2x4s are added where possible.

med | big | huge

This is the sequence I see for assembly on the desert.

med | big | huge

Once enough verticals are firmly attached, the offest ring is lifted and positioned and connected.

Hanging plumb lines to keep everything lined up. NOTE TO SELF: eed to have 20-30 plumb lines on the real thing.

I use my godlike powers to make the rest easier to build-so I'm not down on the floor building.

73 2x4s added!

I need to carve a bit to make room for the 2x4s. bad planning.

Assembling the smaller wheel.

med | big | huge

med | big | huge

All done! Just after this shot, I put the smaller wheel in the larger and found out it was 1/2' too wide!!!

med | big | huge

Time to tear the whole wheel apart!

med | big | huge

To make sure the alignment is perfect this time (I had problems the first time) I am going to make a solid framework and attach the two gears to it so there is no place for mis-alignment to occur.

Frame made, adding the shortened 2x4s.

To model the skateboard wheel, I'm using Hot wheel cars.

med | big | huge

I made a rough (not final) frame to mount the hot wheel chassis on to hold the main wheel as a quick test-off for the weekend, and HAVE to know before I leave if this is gonna work.

Lifting the main ring into place.

med | big | huge

The outside of the main wheel turned out a but bumpy, but this is ok...

med | big | huge

...it ROLLS SMOOTHLY even on this worst case situation.

med | big | huge

Adding the inner wheel and using my arm as the upper support. It seems like the gears will probably turn without and exoborident amount of people in the wheel.

My Mr Sulu action figure (NOT A DOLL) is to scale at about 5' 10" tall or more.
