Burningman 2002:
Water Tower: the Deck

[medium] [BIG]
Bring the little tower out to the yard-maybe if I plant it a big one will grow?

Another 'before' view. Note a couple of the foot diameter cement foundations I sunk earlier.

The tower and the deck it inspired are my excuse for doing something I've wanted to do for a while: get rid of the grass in the backyard. (Round-Up not a lack of watering caused it to be so brown.)

Another desire for a while has been to have a little 'zen garden' to play in when I get out of my daily cubicle. Figured it was easier to put the gravel down before I stared getting to crazy building the deck.

The base is nearly done.

A bit hard to see, but the ends of the deck a cantilevered a couple feet out away from the foundations.

Slap a coat of stain on the base before the decking.

The decking is added.

Home stretch in sight!

I'd normally use pencils or some other conveniently sized spacers for the deck boards, but I had to fit the bords into some pretty specific sized spaces. Using a bunch of cedar shims made relatively even spacing possible.

Ta-Da!

Now I have a place to build the tower!
